SL vs HL

What IB Physics SL covers — and what it drops

IB Physics SL shares the same five themes (A–E) as HL on the 2025 syllabus, but omits the HL-only topics — A.4 Rigid-body mechanics, A.5 Relativity and D.4 Induction — and the HL-only depth within each shared topic. The twenty-one cheatsheets below are the SL topics; on each page the HL-only extensions are clearly marked so SL students can skip them. Physics SL and HL both sit Papers 1 and 2 (there is no Paper 3 in Physics). Prefer the full higher-level set? Browse the Physics HL cheatsheet hub.

FAQ

IB Physics SL frequently asked questions

A few questions IB students and parents in Singapore often ask about the IB Physics SL course and these resources.

How is IB Physics SL different from HL on the 2025 syllabus?
SL and HL share themes A–E, but SL omits three HL-only topics — Rigid-body mechanics (A.4), Relativity (A.5) and Induction (D.4) — and the additional HL depth within each shared topic. Both sit Paper 1 (multiple choice + data) and Paper 2; HL papers are longer. Each cheatsheet marks the HL-only material so SL students can skip it.
How many topics are in IB Physics SL?
The 2025 Physics syllabus has five themes — A Space, time & motion; B The particulate nature of matter; C Wave behaviour; D Fields; E Nuclear & quantum physics. This hub curates the twenty-one SL topics; the three HL-only topics are excluded.
Is the physics data booklet allowed in the exam?
Yes — the IB Physics data booklet is provided in both papers and contains most equations and constants. But several relationships must still be derived or memorised, and the cheatsheets flag exactly which. Download the booklet from the official IB subject page.
Which topics are most examined in IB Physics SL?
Across recent papers, mechanics (A.1–A.3), electricity (B.5), waves (C.1–C.4) and atomic/nuclear (E.1–E.3) carry the most marks. Each cheatsheet's exam-attack plan maps the common question cues to the method examiners reward.
Are these IB Physics SL cheatsheets free?
Yes — every topic page and its printable PDF are free with no sign-up. The paid Lifetime Library adds full Notes, Tutorial booklets and mark-scheme Solutions; enrolled Photon Academy students get it free.
