IB Math Resources

Are you struggling to excel in IB Math? Whether you're taking IB Mathematics Analysis and Approaches (AA) or Applications and Interpretation (AI), achieving a top score of 7 can be incredibly challenging — especially at Higher Level (HL).
At Photon Academy, we offer expert IB Math tuition in Singapore specifically designed to help students overcome the complexities of both AA and AI. Our experienced tutors understand the intricacies of the IB curriculum and provide targeted, personalised support to address each student's needs — from managing the vast syllabus to mastering IB Math Paper 3, one of the hardest papers in the entire IB curriculum.
Choose Your Stream

Best for: Students heading into Mathematics, Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or Economics at university.
Focus: Pure mathematics — algebra, calculus, proof, trigonometry, complex numbers, vectors. Strong emphasis on mathematical reasoning and abstraction.
HL adds: Complex numbers, further calculus, proof by induction, vectors in 3D, and Paper 3 (problem-solving paper).
Tutor: Mr Ejaz specialises in AA HL.
AA is the more traditional, proof-heavy pathway. Students are expected to derive results, construct logical arguments, and solve multi-step problems without a calculator on Paper 1. At HL, topics like complex number geometry, proof by induction, and advanced calculus techniques make this one of the most intellectually demanding courses in the IB. Our AA tuition builds fluency through deliberate practice — starting with strong algebraic foundations and progressing to exam-level problem-solving from term one.

Best for: Students heading into Social Sciences, Business, Biology, Psychology, or any field using statistics and modelling.
Focus: Real-world mathematical modelling, statistics, financial mathematics, and Voronoi diagrams.
HL adds: More complex statistics, further calculus applications, graph theory, and Paper 3 (modelling investigation).
Tutors: Mr Ejaz (AI HL), Mr Aliman (AI SL/HL).
AI places mathematics in real-world contexts — financial modelling, population growth, statistical inference, and data analysis using technology. While AI is sometimes perceived as the "easier" option, AI HL is far from straightforward: it covers graph theory, chi-squared tests, differential equations in modelling, and a demanding Paper 3 investigation. Our AI tuition focuses on building strong GDC skills, interpreting output accurately, and writing clearly structured responses that score full communication marks.

Why Students Struggle
IB Math HL is widely recognised as one of the most demanding subjects in the IB Diploma Programme. Students often underestimate the step up from IGCSE or O-Level Mathematics. Key challenges include:
AA HL demands genuine mathematical fluency. Topics like complex numbers, proof by induction, and Paper 3 problem-solving require deep conceptual understanding — not just formula memorisation.
Many students arrive comfortable with procedural maths but struggle when asked to construct proofs or tackle unseen problem types. At Photon Academy, we bridge this gap by training students to think like mathematicians — breaking unfamiliar problems into known structures, developing logical arguments, and building the confidence to attempt questions they haven't seen before.
AI HL covers an unusually wide range of topics from statistics to graph theory to modelling. Students need both numerical accuracy and the ability to communicate mathematical reasoning clearly.
The sheer volume of distinct topic areas — Voronoi diagrams, hypothesis testing, differential equations, regression — means students cannot afford to leave any section unstudied. Our AI tuition covers every topic systematically, with emphasis on GDC proficiency, and teaches students to write structured responses that earn full communication and interpretation marks.

Paper 3 is unique to HL and widely considered the hardest paper in the IB. It presents unseen problem-solving scenarios that require students to apply multiple techniques under timed pressure.
Paper 3 cannot be crammed — it tests mathematical thinking, not memorised solutions. We prepare students with monthly Paper 3 mock sessions from Year 1 onwards, exposing them to a range of investigation styles and building the resilience to work through extended, multi-part problems under exam conditions.
Students from an IGCSE or local school background often find the jump to IB Math significant. Gaps in algebra and calculus foundations can quickly compound. Early intervention makes a critical difference.
The transition is especially steep for students who scored well in IGCSE with strong procedural skills but limited exposure to proof, abstraction, or multi-step reasoning. Our bridging programme runs before Year 1 begins, closing foundational gaps in algebra, functions, and trigonometry so students start the IB syllabus on solid ground.

Our Advantage
Our IB Math tutors hold IBO certification and have deep familiarity with the current syllabus, mark schemes, and examiner expectations for both AA and AI.
Whether you're in AA HL, AI SL, or anything in between, lessons are tailored to your specific syllabus, school, and target grade. No generic tuition — every session is built around your needs.
Group sessions have a hard cap of 4 students. Every student gets direct attention, can ask questions freely, and never gets left behind in a crowded classroom.

All students receive: comprehensive topic notes, curated question banks, past paper practice with worked solutions, WhatsApp support, and recorded lessons for revision.
Singapore's Largest IB AA HL Resource Library
15+ years of teaching IB AA HL exclusively means every topic, every past paper question type, and every Paper 3 scenario has been mapped, workshopped, and turned into targeted practice material. No other tutor centre in Singapore offers this depth of coverage for AA HL.
Syllabus Coverage

Every lesson begins with a short diagnostic — targeted questions that pinpoint exactly where marks are being lost, so lesson time is spent on what matters most.
AA students build algebraic fluency and function mastery. AI students develop statistical literacy and modelling technique — the skills that carry the most marks across Papers 1 and 2.
Past papers from month one. Students work real IB questions under timed conditions, then review every mark lost against official mark schemes — building the exam instinct that separates a 6 from a 7.

Common Questions
IB Math AA (Analysis and Approaches) focuses on pure mathematics — algebra, calculus, proof, and abstract reasoning. It is best suited for students planning degrees in mathematics, physics, engineering, or economics. IB Math AI (Applications and Interpretation) focuses on real-world modelling, statistics, and technology-assisted mathematics. It suits students heading into social sciences, business, biology, or psychology. Both are offered at HL and SL.
IB Math HL is widely considered one of the hardest subjects in the IB Diploma. The syllabus is broad, the pace is fast, and Paper 3 (unique to HL) demands unseen problem-solving. With proper guidance, structured practice, and early exam technique training, a 6 or 7 is achievable — which is why 95%+ of our students reach this target.
Group lessons are $480 for 4 lessons (1.5 hours each). 1-to-1 tuition is $600 for 4 lessons, subject to tutor availability. Fees are prorated and there are no hidden charges.

Yes. IA support is included as part of our tuition programme. Our tutors guide students from topic selection through to final write-up, helping them understand the assessment criteria and avoid common mistakes.
Over 95% of our IB Math students score a 6 or 7. In the November 2024 IB examinations, 100% of our students from SJI (Singapore) and ACS(I) achieved a 6 or 7 in IB Math. Our tutors — Mr Ejaz, Mr Dee, and Mr Aliman — have collectively taught over 1,000 IB students across Singapore and internationally.
Paper 3 is unique to HL and tests extended problem-solving and investigation skills. We run monthly Paper 3 mock sessions from Year 1, exposing students to a wide range of investigation formats. Students learn to break unfamiliar problems into manageable steps, communicate their reasoning clearly, and manage time across multi-part questions. This consistent practice builds the confidence and resilience needed for exam day.
Ideally, students should begin IB Math tuition at the start of Year 1 — or even before, with our pre-IB bridging programme. Starting early allows time to build strong foundations, stay ahead of the school syllabus, and integrate IA preparation naturally. Students who join in Year 2 can still improve significantly, but earlier intervention gives the best results.
Yes. Topic selection is one of the most important decisions for a strong IA. Our tutors help students identify topics that align with their interests, are mathematically rich enough to score well, and avoid common pitfalls. We guide the entire IA process — from research question to data collection, analysis, reflection, and final formatting — ensuring students meet all assessment criteria.
