Transformations of Graphs — IB Maths AA HL Practice

Graph transformations trip up students who guess the direction. Practise translations, stretches and combined arguments as precise point-mappings — with the rule re-taught each time you slip.

The idea

Replacing $x$ with $(x-a)$ shifts the graph RIGHT by $a$. A point's $x$-coordinate increases by $a$; the $y$ is unchanged.
💡 Inside the bracket = horizontal and opposite to the sign: $f(x-a)$ moves right, $f(x+a)$ left.
