MYP(Middle Years Programme)是针对11至16岁学生的课程,旨在培养他们的批判性思维、探究精神和全球意识。

(Chinese A: Language and Literature)两个选项。

Going from Chinese IB MYP to DP

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) and Diploma Programme (DP) are globally recognized educational programs that provide students with extensive academic and personal development opportunities. In these two stages, language learning also plays a crucial role. Let’s delve into the spectrum of Chinese proficiency in IB MYP and DP and explore effective strategies to help students enhance their language skills.

MYP Chinese: Building a Foundation

The MYP (Middle Years Programme) is designed for students aged 11 to 16, aiming to develop their critical thinking, inquiry skills, and global awareness. In the MYP stage, Chinese courses are mainly divided into two categories: mother tongue courses and foreign language courses.

Mother Tongue Courses

Mother tongue courses are aimed at students whose native language is Chinese, with the goal of improving their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. The course content covers literary works, practical texts, media texts, and emphasizes the use of language and cultural understanding.

Foreign Language Courses

Foreign language courses are aimed at students for whom Chinese is a second language or foreign language, focusing on the development of basic language skills. Students gradually master basic Chinese grammar and vocabulary through training in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

DP Chinese: In-Depth Learning

The DP (Diploma Programme) is a two-year program for students aged 16 to 19, designed to prepare them for university and future careers. At the DP stage, Chinese courses are divided into Chinese A (native or near-native level), Chinese B (second language level), and Chinese AB initio (beginner level).

Chinese A

Chinese A courses include Chinese A: Literature and Chinese A: Language and Literature. The courses require students to read and analyze various literary works in depth and engage in creative and critical writing. Students need to have a high level of Chinese reading and writing skills, as well as a deep understanding of cultural and social issues.

Chinese B

The Chinese B course targets students with low to intermediate proficiency levels in Chinese, offered at Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL). The course aims to enhance students’ language application skills and cross-cultural understanding, covering various real-life language contexts such as tourism, health, and technology, among five major themes. Students are required to demonstrate their language proficiency and cultural sensitivity through various tasks in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Transition from MYP to DP: Challenges and Strategies

The transition from MYP to DP is a challenge for many students, especially in language learning. Here are some strategies to address this transition:

  1. Continuous Language Practice: Maintain continuous language learning, especially during holidays and extracurricular time, to ensure that language skills do not regress.
  2. Increase Reading Volume: Read various Chinese books, newspapers, and magazines to expand vocabulary and enhance reading comprehension skills.
  3. Diversified Learning Resources: Use a variety of resources such as movies, music, and radio to enrich language learning methods and pathways.
  4. Regular Writing Practice: Improve writing skills and expressive techniques by writing diaries, articles, and reviews.
  5. Cultural Experience: Participate in Chinese-related cultural activities such as festival celebrations and art exhibitions to enhance understanding and interest in Chinese culture.

While the Chinese courses in MYP and DP span a wide proficiency range, students can successfully transition and achieve excellent results through effective strategies and continuous effort.  As Chinese teachers, our task is to provide students with diverse learning resources, patient guidance, and full support to enhance their language skills, laying a solid foundation for a smooth transition from MYP to DP. This preparation enables them to handle the final DP exams with ease. Additionally, we focus on cultivating students’ lifelong learning and critical thinking abilities, encouraging them to continuously advance in their language learning journey and laying a solid foundation for their future.
