Pre-IB Tuition in Singapore — All Three Pathways, One Destination

The IB Diploma Programme begins in Year 11. But the two years before it vary enormously depending on which school a student attends. Some schools use Cambridge IGCSE. Others follow the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP). Local schools on the Integrated Programme (IP) skip O-Levels entirely.

All three roads arrive at IB DP Year 1. But they arrive with different strengths — and different gaps. A parent who understands this is a parent who can act early.

Cambridge IGCSE

Cambridge IGCSE Extended is excellent IB preparation when taught with depth. The subject-specific knowledge and external exam discipline it builds are genuine strengths. IGCSE Additional Maths (0606) in particular is outstanding IB Math AA HL preparation. The key risk: many centres teach IGCSE purely for exam technique. Students who can reproduce procedures without understanding them find IB DP's demand for reasoning unexpectedly difficult. IB MYP

Years 6–10 (full IB continuum). Internal teacher assessment on four criteria (A–D). Grades 1–7, no external Cambridge exam. Schools: CIS · GESS · XCL World Academy · Stamford American · ~6 others.

IB Middle Years Programme (MYP)'s inquiry-based approach mirrors IB DP's philosophy — students develop the thinking habits and assessment criterion familiarity that IB DP rewards. MYP students who engage seriously with Criterion B and C assessments arrive at IB DP with genuine IA preparation. The risk: no external exam means no honest performance benchmark before IB Year 1. IP (Integrated Programme)

The Integrated Programme (IP) is designed specifically as a direct track to IB DP. Schools like ACS(I) and SJI have refined their curricula over years to align with IB outcomes — and Photon Academy's results at these schools reflect this: 100% of our ACS(I) and SJI students scored 6–7 in IB Math. The risk: no external benchmark until IB DP Year 1. Some students arrive underestimating the step-up. Pre-IB tuition supports students in Years 9–10 before the IB Diploma Programme, regardless of which curriculum they follow (IGCSE, MYP, or IP). The goal is to build the subject knowledge and thinking skills IB DP Year 1 demands — so students arrive ready rather than scrambling.

Both lead to IB DP but prepare students differently. IGCSE builds strong subject content and external exam technique. MYP builds inquiry skills, criterion-based assessment familiarity, and extended writing habits. Neither is definitively better — the key is ensuring the gaps each programme leaves are addressed before IB Year 1.

ACS International, SJI International, Hwa Chong International School (HCIS), One World International School (OWIS), Australian International School (AIS), EtonHouse International, Dover Court International, Tanglin Trust School, Nexus International School, Dulwich College Singapore and others all use IGCSE as their pre-IB pathway.

Singapore MYP schools include Canadian International School (CIS), GESS, XCL World Academy, Stamford American International School, and others. The IB lists 10 MYP schools in Singapore.

ACS (Independent), Methodist Girls' School (MGS), and St. Joseph's Institution (SJI) offer the MOE-listed IP leading to IB DP. SOTA (School of the Arts) has its own arts-integrated 6-year IP also leading to IB DP.

Year 9 at the latest — or earlier for students targeting IB Math AA HL or HL Sciences. The summer before IB Year 1 is also a high-value intervention point. The earlier the better: foundations built in Year 9 compound positively through to IB final exams.

Group tuition is $480 for 4 lessons per month (1.5 hours each, max 4 students). 1-to-1 is $600 for 4 lessons. Same pricing across all pre-IB programmes. Fees are prorated, no hidden charges.

Yes — in fact, we often help students make better HL and SL choices through the diagnostic process. After 1–2 sessions we can give an honest assessment of where a student's genuine strengths and content gaps are. This sometimes leads to a subject choice revision that serves them significantly better in Years 11 and 12. A student who chooses Math AA HL without the algebra fluency to handle it will struggle from week one. Our diagnostic helps prevent that.

Cambridge IGCSE is used by most Singapore international schools: ACS International, HCIS, OWIS, SJI International, Dover Court, EtonHouse, Dulwich, Tanglin, Nexus, AIS and OFS. IB MYP is used by CIS, GESS, XCL, Stamford American, Hillside World Academy and NLCS Singapore.
