"Is it even possible to get a 7 in IB Physics?" It is a question we hear frequently at Photon Academy. The short answer is yes — absolutely. But achieving the highest grade demands more than brute-force memorisation. There is a persistent belief that IB Physics is one of the hardest subjects in the Diploma Programme. While the syllabus is certainly rigorous, its difficulty is often overstated. Unlike programmes that reward memorisation of isolated facts, the IB Physics curriculum prioritises conceptual understanding and the ability to apply principles to unfamiliar situations. Students who shift their mindset from "learn the formula" to "understand why the formula works" frequently discover that physics becomes far more intuitive — and far more rewarding.
This emphasis on application over recall means that students who invest time in genuinely understanding the material — rather than passively re-reading notes — tend to perform significantly better. The subject is not about being "naturally gifted" at physics; it is about approaching the content with the right strategy and the right support.
One of the most encouraging aspects of IB Physics is its grade boundaries. Compared to subjects like Mathematics AA HL or Chemistry HL, the threshold for a grade 7 in Physics is often relatively lower. In many exam sessions, scoring in the mid-to-high 60s (as a percentage) has been sufficient to secure the top grade. What does this mean in practice? It means that perfection is not required. Students do not need to answer every question flawlessly. Students and parents often compare IB Physics with A-Level Physics, but the two programmes differ in fundamental ways. A-Level Physics follows a more linear, content-driven approach: learn the topic, practise past papers, refine technique. The IB, by contrast, demands that students integrate theory with practical applications, engage in critical thinking, and demonstrate skills across experimental work, data analysis, and extended writing.
The Internal Assessment (IA) — worth 20% of the final grade — is a prime example. There is no equivalent in A-Level. The IA requires students to design, conduct, and write up an original experiment, and it is assessed against specific IB criteria that demand scientific rigour. Students who work with tutors experienced in A-Level but unfamiliar with IB-specific assessment structures often find themselves underprepared for this component.
