Cambridge IGCSE is the most widely used pre-IB qualification at international schools in Singapore. Taken in Years 9–10, it provides the subject-specific foundations that feed directly into IB Diploma Year 1. At Photon Academy, we teach IGCSE differently from most centres: our tutors also teach IB DP, which means every IGCSE lesson is taught with awareness of what IB Year 1 actually demands.
We offer IGCSE tuition for Mathematics — Cambridge International Mathematics (0607), Cambridge Mathematics Extended (0580), and Edexcel IGCSE Mathematics A (4MA1) — alongside Additional Mathematics (0606), Physics (0625), Chemistry (0620), and Biology (0610). We teach whichever syllabus your school follows. All subjects at Extended tier.
Syllabus variants:
Cambridge Int'l Mathematics (0607) — used at HCIS, ACS Int'l, OWIS, EtonHouse, Dover Court, Dulwich and most Singapore international schools.
Cambridge Mathematics Extended (0580) — used at AIS and OFS.
Edexcel IGCSE Mathematics A (4MA1) — used at Nexus and Tanglin Trust.
Extended tier only for IB-track students. Tutor: Mr Ejaz, Mr Dee.
Whether your school uses 0607, 0580, or Edexcel 4MA1, the Extended tier is the correct choice for IB-track students. All three syllabuses cover the algebraic and geometric foundations IB DP builds on — vectors, functions, statistics, and trigonometry — though the exam structure and weighting differs between boards. 0607 (International Maths) is more investigation-based and is used by the majority of Singapore international schools. 0580 is the traditional exam-heavy Cambridge Maths syllabus. Edexcel 4MA1 follows a similar extended structure with Pearson's own paper style. At Photon Academy, we are familiar with all three and tailor lessons accordingly. We teach Extended exclusively — Core tier leaves significant IB Year 1 gaps.
Best for: High-ability students planning IB Math AA HL or AI HL.
Content: Calculus (differentiation + integration), logarithms, trigonometry, binomial theorem, permutations, circular measure, proof.
Tutor: Mr Ejaz.
Additional Maths is the single best IGCSE investment for a student planning IB Math AA HL. The calculus and algebra content of 0606 overlaps directly with IB AA Year 1 — students who arrive at IB AA HL having done Additional Maths typically find the first term significantly more manageable than peers who did not. Mr Ejaz, who has taught IB Math AA HL for 15+ years, considers 0606 essential preparation for AA HL and strongly recommended for AI HL.
Continues into IB Math tuition.
Best for: Students planning IB Physics HL or SL, Engineering or any physical science.
Extended tier: Electromagnetic induction, nuclear reactions, deeper quantitative mechanics, waves, and electricity.
Tutor: Mr Ejaz, Mr Dee.
IGCSE Physics Extended builds the mechanics, waves, and electricity foundations that IB Physics HL assumes from day one. Students who arrive at IB Physics without these fundamentals firmly in place spend the first term catching up while the syllabus moves forward. Mr Ejaz's NUS Mechanical Engineering background means he teaches physics as a connected body of understanding — not disconnected topics — which is exactly what IB Physics HL rewards.
Continues into IB Physics tuition.
Chemistry: Atomic theory, bonding, stoichiometry, acids, redox, electrochemistry, organic chemistry (alkanes, alkenes, esters, polymers).
Biology: Cells, enzymes, nutrition, transport, coordination, reproduction, genetics, ecology, evolution.
Both Extended. Tutor: Specialist Tutor.
IGCSE Chemistry and Biology both require a significant step up from combined lower-secondary science. The Extended tier's quantitative demands in Chemistry — stoichiometry, mole calculations, titration — and the conceptual depth of IGCSE Biology genetics and molecular biology are exactly the foundations IB DP HL builds on. We treat IGCSE Chemistry and Biology as IB preparation, not just exam preparation.
Continues into IB Chemistry tuition and IB Biology tuition.
Grades available: C–G.
Papers: Papers 1 and 2 (Maths); Papers 1 and 3 (Sciences).
Best for: Students who need the qualification but are not continuing the subject at IB or A-Level.
Not recommended: For any student planning to enter IB DP. Core tier leaves significant content gaps that affect IB Year 1 performance.
Grades available: A*–G.
Papers: Papers 3 and 4 (Maths Extended); Papers 1, 2, and 4 (Sciences Extended).
Best for: All students planning IB DP or A-Levels. Required to unlock the full A* grade and access the additional content — vectors, matrices, organic chemistry, molecular genetics — that IB Year 1 assumes.
Photon Academy: We teach Extended exclusively.
If you are unsure which tier your child is on, check with their school. If they are at an IB-track international school, they should be on Extended. Our tutors will advise during the initial consultation.
IGCSE Extended in Year 9 is a step up most students don't anticipate after lower secondary. Surds, vectors, electrochemistry, and organic chemistry all require genuine understanding. Students who coast early find themselves behind by Year 10. Early structured tuition prevents this.
0606 introduces calculus for the first time. Without solid Extended Maths foundations first — whether that is 0607, 0580, or Edexcel — students fall behind on differentiation and integration quickly. The correct approach is strong Extended Maths by end of Year 9, then 0606 introduced incrementally from Year 10 start.
Many IGCSE centres teach purely for Cambridge exam technique — procedure over understanding. This works for Cambridge but fails at IB, where questions require reasoning, justification, and applying concepts in unfamiliar contexts. At Photon Academy we teach for understanding first, exam technique second.
Even strong IGCSE students are sometimes surprised by IB Year 1. The pace is faster, the questions demand more reasoning, and IA skills require abilities IGCSE doesn't assess. Our IGCSE tuition explicitly builds these IB-specific skills during Years 9–10 — so the transition is a step, not a cliff. See our Pre-IB tuition.
Our tutors teach both IGCSE and IB DP. Every lesson is informed by what IB Year 1 actually demands. This is rare and valuable.
Familiar with both boards' mark schemes and exam styles.
Hard cap of 4 per group. Every student gets direct attention.
Topic notes, past papers, WhatsApp support, recorded lessons.
95%+ of our IB DP students score 6 or 7. Our IGCSE students arrive at IB DP with the strongest foundations.

Yes. Photon Academy tutors teach Cambridge International Mathematics (0607), Cambridge Mathematics Extended (0580), and Edexcel IGCSE Mathematics A (4MA1). Most Singapore international schools use 0607 — including HCIS, ACS International, OWIS, EtonHouse, Dover Court, and Dulwich. AIS and OFS use 0580. Tanglin Trust and Nexus use Edexcel. We tailor content to whichever syllabus your child's school follows.
Our IGCSE students come from ACS International, SJI International, Hwa Chong International School (HCIS), One World International School (OWIS), Australian International School (AIS), EtonHouse International, Dover Court International, Tanglin Trust School, Nexus International School, Dulwich College Singapore and more.
Cambridge IGCSE Additional Mathematics (0606) is an advanced extension covering functions, logarithms, trigonometry, differentiation, and integration. It is strongly recommended for students planning IB Math AA HL, as the content overlaps directly.
IGCSE Extended is excellent IB preparation when taught with depth rather than just exam technique. At Photon Academy, our tutors teach IGCSE knowing exactly what IB Year 1 demands — so students arrive ready, not catching up.
Yes. Online and in-person (5 Tank Road, #04-03 Nagarathar Building) at identical pricing. All sessions include WhatsApp support and recorded lessons.
Ideally at the start of Year 9 — or even earlier for Additional Maths. This gives enough time to build genuine conceptual depth rather than cramming before Cambridge exams. Students joining in Year 10 can still improve significantly with structured support.
Cambridge International Mathematics (0607) and Cambridge Mathematics Extended (0580) are two different IGCSE Maths syllabuses. 0607 is the International variant used by most Singapore international schools — it covers graphical calculators and has a slightly broader applied scope. 0580 is the Extended variant used at AIS and OFS. Both are accepted for IB DP entry. At Photon Academy we teach all variants — 0607, 0580, and Edexcel 4MA1.
Not at all. Year 10 is when most of our IGCSE students join — it is when the content increases in difficulty and exam preparation becomes the priority. We start with a diagnostic session to identify exactly where the gaps are, then build a targeted plan for the June or November exam session. Students who join in January of Year 10 consistently make significant progress before their June papers.
