The IB Middle Years Programme is unlike any other secondary curriculum in Singapore. There are no external exams, no past papers to drill, and no marks-based mark schemes — just four assessment criteria (A–D), teacher judgement, and the looming reality of IB Diploma Programme Year 1 ahead.
At Photon Academy, our IB MYP tuition is structured around exactly this reality. We strengthen performance against each MYP criterion while progressively building the content depth that IB DP — particularly Math AA HL, Physics HL and Chemistry HL — will demand from day one.
The IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) is a five-year curriculum for students aged 11–16. It forms the middle stage of the full IB continuum — after PYP and before IB DP. Schools like CIS, GESS, XCL World Academy and Stamford American follow MYP as their complete secondary curriculum.
The MYP is philosophically different from Cambridge IGCSE. Where IGCSE tests knowledge and procedure through external exams, MYP assesses students on four assessment criteria (A–D) in each subject — scored by teachers against internationally benchmarked descriptors. The emphasis is on thinking, inquiry, communication, and real-world application.
This has real implications for how MYP tuition should work. Drilling past papers — effective for IGCSE — misses the point for MYP. At Photon Academy, we structure MYP lessons to directly strengthen performance against each assessment criterion, while building the subject content depth that IB DP Year 1 will demand.
The MYP has no external examination before IB DP (unless students opt into the voluntary eAssessment). This means content gaps can grow through Years 6–10 without honest external feedback — only surfacing in IB Year 1. Regular external tuition provides the benchmarking MYP's internal assessment cannot.

MYP Mathematics Extended in Years 9–10 is the correct strand for students planning IB Math AA HL. The algebraic content of MYP Extended is good but typically less rigorous than IGCSE Additional Maths — students need to supplement with algebra, trigonometry, and early calculus to be genuinely ready for AA HL Year 1. Our MYP Maths tuition builds this content depth while ensuring all four criteria are addressed, particularly Criterion B (pattern investigation) which requires deliberate practice.

MYP Sciences' inquiry approach — Criteria B and C — mirrors IB DP IA skills directly. Students who take these criteria seriously are genuinely ahead on IA methodology when IB Year 1 begins. The gap is in quantitative content depth: MYP Physics covers mechanics, waves, and electricity at a less mathematical level than IB Physics HL requires. Students at these schools are assessed by teachers on MYP criteria rather than external Cambridge exams.
MYP Mathematics and Sciences are each assessed on four criteria: A — Knowing and Understanding, B — Investigating Patterns (Maths) / Inquiring and Designing (Sciences), C — Communicating / Processing and Evaluating, D — Applying in Real-Life Contexts / Reflecting on Impacts. Each criterion is scored 0–8, giving a maximum of 32, converted to an MYP grade of 1–7.
MYP Mathematics develops strong inquiry and communication skills. However, its algebraic content depth is typically less rigorous than IGCSE Extended, particularly for students planning IB Math AA HL. Students aiming for AA HL should supplement MYP with additional algebra, trigonometry, and calculus foundations. Photon Academy provides exactly this content bridge.
MYP Sciences' inquiry approach (Criteria B and C) maps directly onto IB DP IA skills. However, content depth in MYP Sciences is typically broader and less specialised than IGCSE. Students entering IB Physics HL or Chemistry HL from MYP often need supplementary content — particularly in quantitative physics and organic chemistry.
The standard MYP is internally assessed by teachers at each school. An optional MYP eAssessment exists but most Singapore schools do not require it. This means students receive no externally benchmarked grade before IB DP Year 1 — making external tuition valuable as an independent performance benchmark.
Group MYP tuition is $480 for 4 lessons per month (1.5 hours each, max 4 students). 1-to-1 is $600 for 4 lessons. Fees are prorated, no hidden charges.
Year 9 at the latest — earlier for students targeting IB Math AA HL. Year 9 is when MYP Mathematics and Sciences increase in complexity and content gaps that will affect IB DP performance first become visible.
Our MYP tuition is designed to genuinely strengthen performance against the four criteria — not to coach for superficial marks. Students who understand the content deeply and can communicate it clearly in criterion-based language naturally perform better in their school assessments. We do not coach to the specific tasks set by individual schools, and we do not ask students to share school assessment materials. Better understanding leads to better results.
Not for IB DP entry. The IB eAssessment is optional and most Singapore MYP schools do not use it. What matters for IB Year 1 success is content depth and assessment-style readiness — which is exactly what our MYP tuition builds, regardless of whether the school sits the eAssessment or not.
